1. At the bottom of Old Kiln Lane turn left. On the right is a commercial apple orchard. You may see some sheep and even some rabbits. On the left is a large open field of Oil seed rape. In winter you may see a fox picking its way across the horizon. At a gateway at the brow of the hill there is a view south to the Chilterns. The old church you can see in front of you is Old St Mary's which you will pass soon. 2. Turn right at the junction of Kiln Lane and Great Lane. How many horses can you see in the field on the left? 3. After 100 metres turn left at the signpost and follow the hedge on your left across a set aside field. Through the metal stile. 4. Turn left at the signpost. You can take a small detour to look at the old church. Enjoy the view over the Flit valley. The lake has been formed as a result of the quarrying for Fuller's earth. Rejoin the farm road at the back of the churchyard. 5. Branch left at the public footpath sign by the farm gate. Enjoy the view to the east. There is a fruit farm and a Beadlow golf course. If you have binoculars you can see the A1 and Lister Hospital. 6. Cross the stile into the field and follow the hedge to your right. Enjoy the view to the west where you can see the gap between Maulden wood and Warren wood where through which the river Flit flows. 7. Cross the stile in the corner of the field and follow the path round the edge of the field. On your right is Pedley Wood Farm. Before you drop down the hill you can see pheasant cover opposite and in the distance you may see traffic on the A6 road. 8. At the bottom of the hill cross the stream and turn right. On your left is Northfield farm. 9. Continue on past the entrance to Chicksands wood. An alternative route (and more interesting) is to enter the wood at this point.
